Information Overload Research Group IORG 2016 Webinar Highlights

The Information Overload Research Group (IORG) hosted a Webinar “Overcoming Information Overload” on December 13th, 2016.

The Information Overload Research Group (IORG) brought together interesting and diverse thinkers to share their views and research.

Here is a summary of the webinar and some of the key points from the speakers:

Nathan Zeldes, IORG’s President

Started with a brief overview and "welcome" message to the attendees.

Jonathan Spira, IORG’s VP of Research

Provided an overview of Information Overload in his presentation “Information Overload in the Headlines”.

His key discussion points were:

  • The growing problem of Fake News.

  • The link between the use of applications and accidents, especially related to driving.

  • Questioned the findings of the recent Pew Research Center study which found that most Americans are not overloaded by information, or at least don't feel they are “Overloaded”.

Lawrence Ampofo, Director, Digital Mindfulness

His presentation was on “Overcoming Information Overload with Digital Mindfulness".

His key discussion points were:

  • How productivity levels were decreasing due to Information Overload.

  • Digital Detox  -Is not the answer to Information Overload and can actually raise stress and anxiety levels.

  • The solution to Information Overload is not found through the use of more applications or more information.

  • The solution to Information Overload is through the application of "Digital Literacy".

  • Digital Literacy - Gaining an awareness on the appropriate use of digital tools.

  • Digital Mindfulness  - Learning to live more aware in the current digital moment by being judicious in technology’s use.

  • Designing for Attention and Humanity  - Designing technology solutions that take human interaction and needs into account.

Emanuele (Lele) Terenzani, Digital Sales CEE Communication Leader at IBM (a.k.a. “Dr. Connections”)

Discussed “My Journey to NoEmail".  His key discussion points were:

  • His journey within his company to learn to function without the use of Email.

  • The tool is not the problem, but rather how we misuse the tools.

  • There is a balance between using one tool for everything (such as Email) and using too many tools.

  • You can use other tools in place of Email and still be completely productive in the business world.

  • Focusing on “NoEmail” helps to increase focus on improving communication in general.

The entire Webinar can be replayed on IORG’s Youtube channel.
